History of Waupun, Wisconsin

Founded in 1839 by Seymour Wilcox in what was then an expansive forest along the banks of the Rock River, Waupon derived its name from the Native American word “Waubun,” which translates roughly to “dawn of the day.” Due to a spelling error made by the state of Wisconsin, the city was named Waupun, a mistake which was never corrected. By 1847, the city had a population of 956 residents, which climbed to 6,725 residents almost 100 years later.

One of the city’s most famous sculptures is entitled, “The End of The Trail,” which depicts a Native American warrior slumped in the saddle of his horse. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, the statue gained recognition when its image appeared on the original cover of the Beach Boys’ 1971 album “Surf’s Up.”
